Workshop: Optimise Master and PhD thesis supervision with online tools

Make your supervison more effective and flexible. Learn new strategies and methods for organising and conducting supervision by combining a traditional supervision process with online meeting and feedback tools.

Pressure of work, an increasing number of students and the current study progress reform all contribute to many supervisors wanting to increase the effectiveness of their supervision activities by planning and conducting supervision when and where it is most convenient. Geographical distances e.g. when the student or the supervisor are abroad, may also hinder regular supervision and increase the need for online contact.

Purpose/ Content

The purpose of this workshop is to give the participants the opportunity to design a blended supervision process thereby increasing the flexibility for both the supervisor and the student. The purpose is also for the participants to test and evaluate online tools for written feedback as well as online platforms for supervision meetings.

You will also get specific advice on how best to act in online fora to ensure a good dialogue and build trust in the relationship with the student. In addition, you will be given the chance to test the different tools and evaluate their relevance for your supervision practice.

Activities

The main focus is on sharing and testing specific supervision principles, methods and tools.

  • The workshop starts with a brief presentation of what supervision elements are best suited for online use.  The presentation also includes specific examples of blended supervision processes.
  • Afterwards, the participants will test specific tools for online written feedback (Google Docs, Screencast-O-Matic og Kaizena) and for online meetings (Adobe Connect, Web Skype, Appear.In).
  • At the end of the workshop, the participants will design a current and real-life supervision process which makes use of principles and methods from the workshop.

Preparations

  • Write a brief description of your experiences using online tools in your supervision.
  • Select and bring a specific example of a task which you are giving (or have given) feedback on.
